Wonderful Travel To St David’s In Wales United Kingdom

Britain’s smallest city lies in the wild and beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park — the rugged area where the patron saint of Wales was born around the year 500 and chose to establish a strict monastic order, which survived numerous Viking attacks. His birthplace and the cathedral built in his honour became an important medieval shrine, with two pilgrimages to St David’s equaling one to Rome.

The idyllically situated St Non’s Chapel, now a ruin, sits above the sea at St Non’s Bay and according to legend marks the spot where St Non gave birth to David. It fell out of use after the Reformation, though the accompanying holy well continued to attract those in hope of a miracle. David is said to have been baptized at Porthclais, the nearby fishing harbour.

The large 12th century Cathedral with its squat tower nestles in a tree-lined hollow on the edge of this tiny city, which in truth is no larger than many villages. It has been repaired and renewed many times over the centuries, but remains a very special place with a wonderful interior. The bells (removed from the Cathedral in 1730 for fear the main tower would collapse) are housed in a detached former gateway known as the Tower Gate (Port-yr-Twr).

The Cathedral — with its active musical life and renowned choir drawn from the city’s small population — hosts an annual music festival in May and June. Indeed, this is no lifeless monument, but remains at the very heart of community life.

The city — actually reaffirmed as such only in 1995 — doesn’t take long to explore, but. has various galleries and (though the Saint might not have approved) several pubs. It serves as a base for coastal walking and watersports in St Bride’s Bay.
